- The introduction of the Midland Merit Table in 1972-1973 resulted in the top 5 teams automatically qualifying for the following seasons National Cup. The bottom 4 clubs along with 4 additional Midland Clubs to qualify attempted for the 6th and final place through a knock-out competition.
